Cogeneration with Animal Oils

New opportunities for the cogeneration power stations fed by strained or liquefied animal fat

The Directive 2009/28/CE concerning renewable sources has been acknowledged.

The Legislative Decree No. 28 of 3 March 2011 (Official Gazette), has lastly implemented the EU Directive 2009/28/CE, by removing the "anomaly regulation" which penalized the generation or cogeneration plants lower than 1 MWe fed by strained or liquefied animal fat.
The new regulation also extends to the above mentioned power plants the feed-in tariff of 280 Euro / MWh, provided that the liquefaction process (straining / rendering) occurs either:

• in the dregs or animal by-products production site;
• in the site where is located the electrical energy power plant;

The decree also establish that the feed-in tariff of 280 Euro / MWh is fixed and steady for 15 years, thus ensuring high returns even for power plants lower than 1 MWe.

These power plants (electrical power 994 kW each.) will be fueled by strained or liquefied animal fat produced by the same companies.
The power plants will be realized in container or in concrete building, in order to reduce the overall dimensions and will employ a M.A.N. Diesel engine Heavy duty 750 rpm (Biofuel line) ensuring high economic savings.
Termoindustriale has already begun the arranging and managing of the authorization procedures, in order to allow, in addition to the commissioning of the plant, also the obtaining of the incentives.

The power stations will enhance the value of the fat processed and therefore the production of renewable energy, with positive effects in terms of environment and economic benefits.
The electricity produced and introduced into the national grid will benefit of the feed in tariff of 280 Euro/MWh. The recovered thermal energy (steam and hot water at 85 ° C) will be used in the production process, reducing consumption of natural gas, with further significant savings.
